Mentally ill man shot dead by soldier

A mentally ill man who attacked and wounded a nurse at the Kingston Public Hospital was fatally shot by a police/military team in the Kingston Western police division this morning.
 
The deceased has been identified as 24 year-old Michael Edwards, a resident of Alamanda Drive, New Haven, Kingston 20.
 
The drama started shortly after five Wednesday morning at the hospital.
 
It's reported that Edwards, who was admitted on Ward 2A, which houses mentally ill patients, attacked a nurse and security personnel at with a pair of scissors then fled the property on foot.
 
After fleeing the hospital, Edwards reportedly made his way to West Street where a major joint police/military operation was in progress.
 
On reaching West Street, the mentally ill man reportedly ran onto the compound of All Saints Anglican Church where he allegedly attacked a police constable, who was stationed at the church, with the pair of scissors.
 
It's reported that the constable fired at him and he fled.
 
He ran to the back of the church and was pursued by police and military personnel.
 
Edwards was fatally shot by a member of the JDF team, allegedly after he attacked them with the scissors.
 
He was transported back to KPH where he was pronounced dead.
 
The nurse was treated for her wounds.
 
But, Sashena Lewis mother of Mr. Edwards is questioning how her son who she left at the hospital to receive care, managed to escape.
 
She said he only started showing signs of mental illness, about a week ago. 
 
 
 
Security operation
 
Meanwhile, during Wednesday's security operation, which involved more than 100 personnel searches were conducted along Matthew's Lane, Rose Lane and the West Street area of the downtown market district.
 
An Ak47 assault rifle was seized.
 
Two suspects, who were wanted by the police, were also arrested during the operation.
