Mines and Geology Division asks public to alert it to mineral discoveries

By Kimone Witter

The Mines and Geology Division of the Ministry of Transport and Mining is encouraging the public to bring to its attention unusual mineral discoveries and other geological interests, despite the low economic potential of the gold coloured mineral in Chester Castle, Hanover.

The mineral, identified as pyrite or "fool's gold", was discovered during excavation works for an absorption pit.

The Mines and Geology Division says it will investigate any mineral occurrence reported by the public and provide technical and economic recommendations towards its development.

If a mineral deposit is discovered, the Minerals (Vesting) Act provides for a share of the royalties payable on the minerals mined to be allotted to the landowner.

It says scientific curiosity of the public has led to many important discoveries that have added to the body of knowledge on the geology of Jamaica.
