President of the Union of Clerical, Administrative and Supervisory Employees (UCASE), Vincent Morrison, is warning that the government is facing a crisis in collecting revenues due to the surge in persons joining the informal sector.
The Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN) reported on Wednesday that Jamaica's unemployment rate increased slightly to 3.4 per cent in July, up from 3.3 per cent in July last year.
STATIN says about 21,900 fewer people were employed during the period.
It noted that just over half of those employed, about 715,000, worked in the formal sector, while approximately 672,000 worked in the informal sector.
Speaking on Radio Jamaica's Real Business on Thursday, Mr. Morrison warned that the government will struggle to meet its revenue targets if more people join the informal sector.
"[The informal sector] is not moving the economy and the contraction in the economy is quite evident. Now, my concern is that I don't see the policies, the plans, the effort being made to turn it around, not even to cauterise what is happening there," he contended.
The biggest employment losses were recorded in agriculture, where about 11,400 jobs were lost.
