National Security Ministry joins effort to stamp out misuse of demonstration plates

National Security Minister Dr. Horace Chang

As the Transport Ministry is seeking to clamp down on the exploitation of motor vehicle demonstration plates, National Security Minister Dr. Horace Chang says a similar position is being taken by the security ministry and its agencies.

He disclosed that vehicles bearing demonstration plates have been linked to serious crimes committed across the country.

"The National Security Council examined the problem. It has wide implications and it is one that is used to not only commit crimes but in fact [is] a source of money laundering in the country. In collaboration with the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Transport and the investigative skill of the police and MOCA, we are looking at a way to resolve the matter, and it will be resolved pretty soon," he promised.

In April, Transport Minister Daryl Vaz highlighted the issue, revealing that the government will be making changes to the use of demonstration plates amid concerns of widespread misuse.

He said while a demonstration plate is used for the automobile trade in relation to moving cars from the wharf or for demonstrating the cars for sale, in many places they are not being used as intended under the Road Traffic Act and associated regulations.
