Neville Garrick, renowned Jamaican graphic artist & visual designer, has died

Neville Garrick, the graphic artist and visual designer who designed most of Bob Marley's albums, as Art Director, among other outstanding creative achievements, has died.

His death was announced via social media on Wednesday by members of his family, who announced that his passing followed "a brief but brave fight with cancer".

"Your prayers for our family during this challenging time are deeply appreciated as we come to terms with this great loss," the statement added.

Garrick, principally based in Los Angeles in recent years, was a graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he played for the football team, reaching the National Collegiate Athletic Association finals in both 1971 and 1972.

After returning to Jamaica he became art director for The Daily News.

He is best known however for creating the art work for many of Bob Marley's album covers, and in later years served as a founder and Executive Director of the Bob Marley Museum.

He also designed the backdrops for many of the Reggae Sunsplash festivals.

Garrick also worked with Burning Spear, Steel Pulse, among other artistes. He is the author of A Rasta's Pilgrimage: Ethiopian Faces and Places (1999).

He was recently honoured by the Government of Jamaica, being awarded the Order of Distinction at the last National Honours and Awards Ceremony on October 16.
