Newly installed president of the Jamaica Teachers' Association (JTA) Dr. Mark Smith is urging Education Minister Fayval Williams to use her portfolio influence to improve teachers' salaries and the ongoing issue of educators migrating for better-paying jobs overseas.

Dr. Mark Smith was officially installed as the JTA president on Monday evening during the association's annual conference in Trelawny.

In his inaugural address, Dr. Smith acknowledged that the shortage of teachers is a global issue.

He called for bipartisan as well as international partnerships and networking with developed countries to help alleviate the problem.

Dr. Smith told Minister Williams that teachers will remain in the country if they are better paid.

He said despite the world-class training provided to local educators, the unattractive salaries keep people uninterested in joining or remaining in the profession.
