Opposition raises alarm about "unhealthy and dehumanizing" conditions at some hospitals

Opposition Spokesman on Health Dr Morais Guy

Opposition Spokesperson on Health Dr. Morais Guy is calling for an urgent solution to what he terms unhealthy and dehumanizing conditions at a number hospitals, citing Savana-la-Mar, Cornwall Regional and Falmouth hospitals in particular.

Dr Guy claims many patients are lying on floors and chairs as they wait to access hospital care.

"They are not being housed in good healthy conditions we we expect from hospitals," he told Radio Jamaica News, adding that there are also concerns about sanitary facilities at these hospitals, citing them as being "below par".

He contends that the regional health authorities are not to be blamed for the conditions,  as the Minister is head of the public health care system and should more closely monitor health care delivery.

Dr Guy, during his contribution to the Sectoral Debate in May, called for Health & Wellness Minister Dr Christopher Tufton to visit hospital wards for a first-hand look at patient facilities and the poor condition of some wards. He's now claiming that the situation has worsened.

In that regard, he expressed concern about "the indignity" of patients "lying on the ground"(floor) at these hospitals and of the nursing and medical teams "having to be stooping down on the floor to treat these persons."

Dr Guy is accusing Dr Tufton of failing to take any action to improve the situation for those who go to these health facilities, who he says are mainly poor Jamaicans.

He's urging Dr Tufton to visit hospital wards and ensure patients in the public health system are being treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.
