Opposition scoffs at Government's "Pivot to Growth" announcement

Opposition Spokesperson on Investment & Trade Anthony Hylton

Opposition Spokesperson on Investment & Trade Anthony Hylton has derided the government's new "Pivot to Growth" strategy an admission of failure of its economic policy.

Mr Hylton, responding in part to the recent contribution to the State of the Nation debate in the Senate by Industry Minister Aubyn Hill, countered that the objective of government's economic policy must be the material well-being of its people.

"The socalled pivot to growth has become necessary because the government has failed to pursue a coherent and realistic strategy to balance the books while balancing people's lives, and to grow the economy," he charged.

He added that the increasing trade deficit and trickle of foreign direct investments, combined with sustained low productivity and lack of competitiveness of locally produced goods and services will undermine the hard won macro-economic stability enjoyed since 2015.

He challenged Senator Hill to disclose the number of cost of promotional foreign trips he has undertaken, "and to provide a full account of the benefits, if any, derived from these trips."

Mr Hylton also lamented the lack of action on the part of the government in moving forward with the Global Logistics Hub Initiative.

In a related move, Prime Minister announced on Tuesday evening that the Port Authority of Jamaica will break ground for 30 acres development in the proposed Caymanas Exclusive Economic Zone, long billed as part of the Logistics Hub Initiatve.
