PAHO issues epidemiological alert regarding cases of expectant mother-to-child transmission of the Oropouche virus

The Pan American Health Organisation has issued an epidemiological alert regarding cases of expectant mother-to-child transmission of the Oropouche virus (OROV) that was first detected in Trinidad & Tobago in 1955.

In a statement, PAHO said recently that an increase in cases has been observed in the region.

It said between January and mid-July this year, nearly 7,700 confirmed cases of Oropouche have been reported in five countries in the Americas, with Brazil having the highest number at 6,976.

PAHO is calling for strengthened surveillance to monitor the potential occurrence of similar events in other countries with the circulation of OROV and other arboviruses.

OROV is transmitted by bites of an insect commonly known as a midge, as well as by the Culex mosquito.
