PM Holness unlikely to rein in MPs for racially divisive comments - Clyde Williams

Attorney and political commentator Clyde Williams

Political commentator Clyde Williams is not convinced that Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness will rein in government Members of Parliament for racially divisive comments on the political platform.

Members of Parliament Everald Warmington and Juliet Cuthbert Flynn have been roundly criticised by civil society group National Integrity Action as well as the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica for their racially charged comments against Opposition Leader Mark Golding.

National Integrity Action has called for Dr. Holness to publicly rebuke the named parliamentarians for their racist remarks.

But Mr. Williams says he would be surprised if Dr. Holness takes such action.

He believes the actions will continue as the campaign heats up for the next general parliamentary election.

"As far as the JLP is concerned, it's a payback to the PNP for how the PNP had used the race card against Mr. Edward Seaga. So I see it as straight political expedience, unprincipled, but I don't expect Cuthbert nor Warmington to back off, and I don't expect the leader of their party to come out and tell them to cool their heels," he reasoned.

Mr. Williams was speaking Thursday on Radio Jamaica's Beyond the Headlines.
