PNP promises to require publishing of statutory declarations by all members of the government's Executive

The People's National Party has promised to make changes to the Integrity Commission Act that will allow for the statutory declarations of all members of the Executive to be published for public scrutiny.

Currently the law only requires the statutory declarations of the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition to be published in the Gazette.

In its manifesto released Tuesday night, the PNP said that it will amend the gag clauses in the IC Act to strike a balance between privacy and the public's right to know.

The opposition party added that replacing the British monarch with a Jamaican President, chosen by and accountable to the people, will be part of its mission.

It says it will ensure the Caribbean Court of Justice becomes Jamaica's final appellate court, replacing the United Kingdom Privy Council and ensuring access to justice at the highest level for all Jamaicans.

The party says it will pursue constitutional amendments through a transparent and participatory process that engages all stakeholders from the ground up.

This process, it pledged, will include engaging with civil society groups, the church, business sector, trade unions and other non-government actors in the design and roll out of the consultation process.

Meetings of the Joint select committee on Constitutional Reform have been stalled since the PNP withdrew its members from the hearings, citing the government's position on maintaining the Privy Council as the country's final appellate court.
