PNP threatens protests if gov't moves ahead with Portmore parish plan

   

The opposition People's National Party is warning of street protests if the ruling Jamaica Labour Party goes ahead with its plan to make Portmore a parish.

 

The government used its super majority in the House of Representatives last week to pass legislation to make Portmore the 15th parish.

 

The amendments to the Counties and Parishes Act were passed despite resistance from the opposition.

 

It is to be debated in the Senate.

 

The Portmore City Municipality says it plans to take legal action to challenge the legislation.

 

And speaking at a party meeting in St. Andrew West Central on Sunday night, PNP General Secretary Dr. Dayton Campbell accused the JLP of seeking to rob the voters of Portmore of their votes in the Local Government Election.

 

He warned that the party will be taking the matter to the streets.

 

"Dem come now and waan try steal the election. You can imagine dem jump up and seh dem aguh beat we, and we guh inna local government election and go over Portmore and we beat dem street and lane. And now dem waan come a Parliament fi seh di mayor weh just beat dem cyah be mayor nuh more. If di Labour Party think it aguh guh suh, we aguh block up di whole a Jamaica and tek it to di streets because the wishes of the people must be observed!" he threatened.
