People's National Party Councillor for the Bellfield Division in Manchester, Mario Mitchell, says unsavoury comments posted from his account on social media platform X were published by a member of his team without his review or approval.
The comments on Monday were made in response to a question regarding drains on a road project, reportedly spearheaded by Councillor Mitchell in his division.
The X posts from the councillor's account featured comments laced with insults and sexual innuendos.
Mr. Mitchell, who has featured regularly during PNP campaign meetings across the island, was heavily criticised by the Jamaica Labour Party, with party spokesperson Venesha Phillips who condemning his utterances. She called for the PNP leadership to address the matter.
In a subsequent post on X, Mr. Mitchell said he took full responsibility for the content posted on his account, describing the comments as deeply inappropriate. He said the individual who made the posts has been suspended and that he was reviewing all internal protocols to prevent a reoccurrence.
Mr. Mitchell apologised to all who were offended, adding that the remarks do not reflect his principles or the professional standards he stressed uphold.
But in a swift response, Ms. Phillips rejected Mr. Mitchell's apology. She also denounced the silence of the PNP hierarchy and woman's movement on the issue.
