Residents in Trench Town, Kingston protested on Tuesday after a man was fatally shot by the police in the community early that morning.
He has been identified as Ralston Weir, otherwise called 'Johnny Five'.
Investigators reported that about 7 a.m., a police team went to Building E room 23, on the third floor of a housing complex in Wilton Gardens, Trench Town, in search of Weir.
The cops had received information that he was armed and was pointing the weapon at a resident with whom he had a dispute.
During an alleged confrontation, he was fatally shot and a firearm seized.
The firearm was retrieved and found to be a black imitation gun resembling a Glock 18 pistol affixed with an empty magazine.
The wounded man was pronounced dead at Kingston Public Hospital.
Residents, some of whom carried placards, lit a fire in the middle of the street to protest the police's action.
They told Radio Jamaica News that Weir was well-known in the community, and described him as very helpful.
His father, Rafael Weir, said he was awakened by the sounds of gunshots.
He questioned the killing of his son by the police, who claimed they were responding to a domestic violence incident at the location.
Mr. Weir said this information was relayed to him by the Independent Commission of Investigations.
