A police constable believed to be involved in the illegal selling of firearms was arrested Tuesday morning in Florence Hill, St. Andrew.
The High Command of the Jamaica Constabulary Force says the policeman was taken into custody following a targeted, intelligence-driven operation.
It says two prohibited firearms were seized during the operation, which forms part of a wider investigation into illicit firearms trafficking.
It adds that the operations are ongoing and further details will be provided as the investigation progresses.
The High Command says the arrest represents a significant development in the JCF's ongoing offensive against the illegal gun trade.
It says members of the JCF are entrusted with extraordinary powers and public confidence and any breach of that trust, especially involving criminal conduct, will be met with swift and uncompromising consequences.
The High Command says there is no place in the JCF for people who seek to use their position to subvert the law.
It also reaffirmed its commitment to rooting out all forms of corruption and criminality regardless of rank or affiliation.
