Halshane Burke reports
The police constable who was arrested on the weekend, after he was allegedly seen with an illegal firearm at a funeral service in Clarendon, remains in custody pending a ruling from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
A relative of the policeman, who was also taken into custody is also awaiting a ruling by the DPP on whether charges should be laid against them.
They drama began sometime in the afternoon when members of a police team were conducting surveillance activities at the funeral service of the late Patrick Thompson, who was shot and killed in Four Paths, Clarendon on September 24.
The deceased is a relative of the constable, who was among mourners at the funeral service.
Investigators reported that the police observed a man with a bulge in his waistband, and when the officers approached the man, he pulled a black handgun from his waistband and handed it to another man who then ran and escaped into bushes.
The man was accosted and he identified himself as a member of the JCF, attached to the Specialised Operations Unit in Kingston.
Investigators alleged that the constable stated that he handed the firearm to his cousin, who was later identified by the police and taken into custody.
Checks made by the police revealed that the constable is not a licensed firearm holder and neither is he assigned a service firearm.
The cops say they conducted a search in the immediate surrounding, which is heavily vegetated, but did not find the weapon.
The constable was later taken to his residence, where several rounds of ammunition were found in a knapsack.
The constable's JCF identification card was also found in the bag.
Both men later denied having any weapon at the funeral.
