Portmore civic group to form umbrella organization to tackle toll issue

Plans are being made for Portmore civic groups to form an umbrella organization to mount new strategies to lobby against the hike in toll rates on Highway 2000. The initiative is aimed at a more structured and united challenge to the increase.

Howard Hamilton, chairman of the Greater Portmore Joint Council, explained that with more groups acting together, any move taken by them should force the government to listen.

“Once we form a coalition, and iron out how we interact with each other, then we will show the government that we really mean business. It might not be a boycott, it may be more than a boycott, but something more that they will definitely have to pay attention,” said Mr. Hamilton.

He added that Thursday’s meeting is to decide on further plans to send a strong message to the government. Mr. Hamilton was speaking on RJR’s Beyond The Headlines on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Dr. Omar Davies, Minister of Transport and Works, has shot down a proposal from Portmore groups for the Class Three category in the toll schedule to be phased out and merged with Class Two. The Minister has written to the groups informing them that the proposal cannot be accommodated. Dr. Davies explained that it would mean a reduction in revenue for the toll operators, for which the government would have to compensate.
