Protest over state of a section of Spanish Town Road sparks responses from state officials

Protesting taxi operators, West Kingston MP Desmond McKenzie, Water Minister Mathew Samuda, and Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness
By Prince Moore

West Kingston Member of Parliament Desmond McKenzie has responded to pleas from taxi operators for the immediate fixing of a broken sewage main in the vicinity of Denham Town Police Station on Spanish Town Road.

He sought to assure them that the matter was being addressed.

Scores of taxi operators demonstrated Tuesday morning, insisting that they want to hear from the authorities now.

They pleaded with the authorities to take into consideration the children who attend Edward Seaga Primary & Infant as well as Tivoli Gardens and Denham Town High schools.

The taxi operators said students and police officers have been forced to hop and skip over raw sewage which has been running onto the roadway for months.

The frustrated taxi operators, who blocked a section of Spanish Town Road demanding swift action, said the issue has become worse.

Another taxi operator, Sheldon Harrison, who plies the Chisholm Avenue to downtown route, said the road is a health hazard.

The operators say they have been heavily ticketed for breaking the traffic light at the intersection:

Mr McKenzie told Radio Jamaica News, in response, that he's in dialogue with the NWC and that some remedial work is expected.

But he said extensive work is required to rectify the broken sewage system.

Emergency work did commence on Tuesday to repair the collapsed drain in the vicinity for the Denham Town Police station along Spanish Town Road.

Minister with responsibility for Water Matthew Samuda said this was part of the National Water Commission's work on the Downtown Kingston Wastewater Improvement Project.

The project is being undertaken to deal with the problem of sewage seeping onto the roadways affecting residents, businesses, and motorists.

Mr Samuda said this next phase will focus on Spanish Town Road, particularly the stretch between Denham Town Police Station and the entrance to Coronation Market.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness also commented on the matter, disclosing that repairs to the sewage system along Spanish Town Road is a precursor to the multi billion dollar work to be undertaken to rehabilitate the entire stretch of Spanish Town Road.
