Psychologist encourages sharing with others instead of lavish spending this Christmas

Leachim Semaj

With Christmas looking different for those displaced by Hurricane Melissa, psychologist Leachim Semaj suggests shifting the usual focus from lavish spending to charitable involvement.

He says more Jamaicans should share with one another and take part in activities that help others.

Dr. Semaj adds that the goal is not to take away the fun but to make it meaningful.

"Well, the fact that Christmas is a deep seated meaning for a lot of people is not going to go away. But what we can do in terms of how we acknowledge and we can celebrate it, you find ways and means of acknowledging that there are others of us who don't even have the ways and means of celebrating. So you tie your celebration how you can further enhance their own quality of life, in whatever way you can, however you can do it. But it is possible for us to do that. We only have to give it some thought," he suggested.
