Public sector workers are set to benefit from a significant salary adjustment, with the Minister of Finance and the Public Service announcing an increase of up to three increments in the substantive salary scales for eligible employees.
The move, which represents an estimated 7.5% boost in basic pay for most public sector workers, is part of the government's continued efforts to modernise and improve the public service compensation system.
Finance Minister Fayval Williams made the announcement on Monday, explaining that the agreement was reached following engagement with the Jamaica Confederation of Trade Unions.
Ms. Williams said this marks a notable departure from the pre-2022 norm when only one increment was granted per year and tied to a minimum score of 75% under the performance management and appraisal system.
The Finance Minister noted that adjustments are already being implemented with some ministries, departments and agencies having made payments to workers. Others are working to meet the end of month payment timeline.
Minister Williams also acknowledged that while the increments are not currently tied to formal performance assessments, the government continues to examine appropriate methods for evaluating performance going forward.
The Finance Minister reaffirmed the government's commitment to continue to dialogue with unions and public sector associations to further refine the compensation framework ensuring remains a fair, transparent and fiscally responsible.
