What began as a story of hope and medical triumph has taken a heartbreaking turn.
Azora Elson, one of the Jamaican conjoined twins successfully separated in Saudi Arabia last year, has died.
Her death was confirmed this morning by her mother, Iesha McMurray.
Azora passed away at the hospital.
The two-year-old underwent a complex separation surgery in Riyadh in November last year, after travelling to Saudi Arabia in July for treatment.
The procedure, which lasted several hours, was carried out by a multi-disciplinary medical team and marked a major milestone, as the twins were joined at the chest, abdomen and liver.
However, doctors had earlier warned that Azora had a severe heart condition, significantly reducing her chances of survival.
Her passing has cast a sombre mood over what was once celebrated as a life-changing operation.
