The police have been called in to investigate the disappearance of several computers from the offices of the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) at National Heroes Circles in Kingston.
Seven computers were discovered missing from the Division on Tuesday morning.
This was confirmed by Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Labour and Social Security Alvin McIntosh.
He says the computers were stolen between Saturday and Sunday.
In addition to the police investigation, the Ministry, which has responsibility for the NIS, has also launched an internal probe to ascertain how the computers were removed from the building without being detected.
In the meantime, Mr. McIntosh says the database of the NIS has not been compromised by the theft of the computers.
“Whatever information that was on those systems was on the main system so our database would not be affected in any way. It is still a serious matter, it is the loss of seven computers so the police have been called in to investigate the matter and we are also doing our own internal investigations to assist the police,” Mr. McIntosh said.
