Slovakia's PM in 'life-threatening condition' after being shot

Slovakia's Prime Minister Robert Fico was shot multiple times after a government meeting and is in a life-threatening condition.

This is according to a statement posted on his official Facebook page.

The Prime Minister was shot in front of a building in the central Slovak town of Handlova, where the off-site meeting was held.

Mr. Fico has been taken to hospital and his alleged assailant detained by police.

Government officials say the incident was an assassination attempt on the Prime Minister.

Mr. Fico won a third term as Slovakian prime minister last October after running a campaign that criticised western support for Ukraine.

The 59-year-old previously served as prime minister for more than a decade, first from 2006 to 2010 and then from 2012 to 2018.

He was forced to resign that year after weeks of mass protests over the murder of investigative journalist Jan Kuciak and his fiancée, Martina Kušnírová.
