Medical technologists are requesting a meeting with the Union of Technical Administrative and Supervisory Personnel [UTASP] to reverse the current position not to accept the compensation review package.

They staged a protest during their lunch break on Monday, expressing dissatisfaction with the union over how it represented the group in wage talks with the government.

Cassandra Monteith, a medical technologist from the Southern Region, speaking on Radio Jamaica's Beyond the Headlines, later in the day, asserted that the improved salary package under the Public Sector Compensation Review Programme will be beneficial to her and her colleagues.

This proposal represents a major increase in pay, compared with their current salary, she said.

Ms Monteith explained that most of the technologists who want to sign are non-unionized, but she was unable to outline the real reasons those who are represented have not accepted the proposed increase.

Donaldo Montaque, one of the medical technologist from the Western Region also said some of his colleagues were not pleased with the leadership of the union and as a result were reluctant to join.

Mr Montaque wants the current chief union delegate to be replaced through the holding of a poll, claiming that he was not selected by his colleagues, and that he is not operating on behalf of the workers.

Shane Bent, medical technologist from the South-Eastern Region expressed the view that the union delegate has been bearing the brunt of the burden in negotiations between members and the government.

But this was happening with a structure is not in place, he said.
