President of the Jamaica Pig Farmers Association, Hanif Brown, says pig farmers along the southern belt of the island were severely impacted by the passage of Hurricane Beryl last month.
Mr. Brown says while the damage was mostly infrastructural, a lot of the animals died due to the extensive heat exposure.
"The majority of pigs lost was during that two weeks after the hurricane. It was as a result of the heatwave, and most of these communities were out of water in the pipes.... My farm alone, I lost over 50-odd pigs within two weeks," he noted.
Mr. Brown said he is awaiting details from the the Rural Agricultural Development Authority, on the assistance that will be given to pig farmers.
