The spouse of Michael Adams, the detainee from the Denham Town police lockup who died at the Kingston Public Hospital on Monday, is questioning the circumstances under which he died.

Senior Superintendent Michael Phipps, head of the Kingston Western Police Division, told Radio Jamaica News that the 23-year-old was taken to hospital last Friday.

"He was actually admitted to the Kingston Public Hospital after complaining of feeling ill, and we had a subsequent report from the doctor suggesting that he died somewhere around 12:20 a.m. on the 7th of October," SSP Phipps outlined.

Adams was charged with murder on December 11, 2023, and had been in custody since.

The man's 39-year-old girlfriend, Kaytie Brown, said she first learned that her boyfriend of three and a half years had been hospitalised when she went to visit him Sunday morning.

But she said she did not get a chance to see him because the police at the hospital told her she needed a letter from Denham Town Police Station.

When she returned to the police station, she reportedly was told that a letter was not necessary and, in any event, it would not have been signed because the office was closed.

The frustrated woman said she returned to the police station on Monday and heard that Mr. Adams had died.

"[The police officer] seh Michael Adams pass... and mi seh him cyah pass cause him never sick; nut'n never do him when him come in," she recounted.

The Independent Commission of Investigations is probing the death of Mr. Adams.

Chief Investigating Officer Kelly-Ann Gayle said the entity is awaiting a post mortem and will also speak with officers at Denham Town Police Station to determine the reason the detainee needed medical attention.
