Sydney Rose, Chairman of the St. Catherine Municipal Corporation's Health and Sanitation Committee
By Kimone Witter
Chairman of the St. Catherine Municipal Corporation's Health and Sanitation Committee, Sydney Rose, says he will be revisiting the health certification and food handlers permit of business operators across the parish.
It comes amid continued concerns over the improper disposal of garbage.
Mr. Rose said he has recommended to the Medical Officer of Health for St. Catherine that permits be denied at renewal, if business operators do not have a contract in place for collection of their garbage.
"We are having a meeting sometime later this month or early next month that we could have this in effect for September. So every single commercial operation and to include also, the guys who treat with tyres, the guys who treat with their jellies and the guys who sell along our public thoroughfare, they are some of the major contributors," he said, lamenting the loss of civic pride.
Meanwhile, Mr. Rose said the disposal of construction waste will also come in for scrutiny and will be included as part of conditions for permits.
"The construction sector is a sore point as well as it relates to how they treat with the disposal of their construction waste. And you would have seen a proliferation of that on several of our streets or in some area, discrete areas, and it is a cause for concern. And I have taken the point from the National Solid Waste Management Authority that these conditions be applied to developers and also persons who are doing any expansion or any construction whether it is commercial or residential, that they have this sort of a contract in place," he declared.
