St. Catherine North Police report reduction in major crimes

Inspector Horace Hunt, of the St. Catherine North Police

The St. Catherine North Police are reporting significant progress in their fight against major crimes.

Inspector of Police in the Division Horace Hunt, in providing an update at the recent St. Catherine Municipal Corporation meeting, reported that murders have dropped by more than a third compared to last year.

"Today's date last year, we stood at 63 murders. Today, we are at 39 murders for the same period, which, if my maths serve me right, I think that's a 38% reduction. And for the same period last year, we had 48 cases of shootings. Presently, only 35 cases of shooting have been reported. And this is saying to us that our efforts, our efforts coupled with our partnership with our stakeholders, is certainly bearing fruits," Inspector Hunt outlined.

He also reported that the Division achieved a breakthrough with the arrest of a suspected car thief.

"As it relates to larceny of motor vehicle, I know it is a concern. I'm also pleased to inform the meeting that one of our major car stealing mastermind has been taken in custody and six stolen motor vehicles were also recovered. So that's an area too that we are looking at in an aggressive way. And we will be resilient in our efforts going forward for the remainder of the year," he promised.
