St. Thomas man charged in relation to alleged abduction and rape of woman

A 21 year-old St. Thomas man is facing several charges in connection with the abduction and rape of a woman last month.

Detectives assigned to the St. Thomas Criminal Investigation Branch, in collaboration with the Centre for the Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse, has charged Richard Cummings of Yallahs District with rape, Robbery with Aggravation, Abduction, Possession of a Prohibited Weapon as well as Aiding and Abetting Grievous Sexual Assault.

It's alleged that on Friday, June 20, Mr Cummings was operating an illegal taxi service along the St. Thomas to Kingston route when he picked up a female passenger.

During the journey, a second male reportedly entered the vehicle and, upon doing so, brandished a firearm.

The victim was allegedly robbed of her personal belongings and sexually assaulted by both men. She was later released in a remote location, approximately three kilometers from the point of the initial incident.

A report was made to the St. Thomas Police, prompting an investigation.

On Saturday, June 21, detectives apprehended the main suspect.

He was later pointed out during an identification parade and charged after being questioned in the presence of his lawyer.
