Steering committee being set up to oversee development of national ride-hailing policy

As discussion continues around the safety and security of ride-hailing platforms, Transport Minister Daryl Vaz said a steering committee is being established to provide oversight for the development of a national ride-hailing policy.

Mr. Vaz said Cabinet in January gave approval for the development of the policy to establish the regulatory framework for the operation of ride-hailing services in Jamaica. Work is also underway to advance the policy to the green paper stage within the next three months.

Minister Vaz said to ensure the policy is in keeping with the demands of the public, the draft policy will be exposed to public scrutiny, as all efforts are now being made to have it approved and shared by March 31 next year.

The update comes after University of Technology (UTech) student Anisa Dilworth's disappearance was linked to an inDrive taxi operator.

inDrive is one of the ride-hailing companies operating in Jamaica.
