Traffic cop dies in St. Ann collision

A man is in police custody following the death of a police constable who died from injuries he sustained in a motor vehicle crash in Moneague, St. Ann, on Monday afternoon.

Constable Christopher Condappa, who was assigned to the Moneague Police Station, was carrying out traffic duties in the town about 2:10 p.m. when his service motorcycle was hit by a speeding motor car travelling in the opposite direction.

Constable Condappa, 34, sustained multiple injuries and was taken to the St. Ann's Bay Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

After the impact, the driver of the motor car sped away.

Another police constable who witnessed the incident pursued the vehicle with the help of a civilian.

They caught up with the motor car at the entrance to the Moneague toll plaza where he was arrested and taken to the police station.

A team of police officers was later deployed to the Moneague Police Station to restore order after angry residents gathered outside demanding that the driver be released to them.
