Trump downplays US war threat in Venezuela, says Maduro's days are 'numbered'

US President Donald Trump, speaking on CBS's 60 Minutes

US President Donald Trump has downplayed the possibility of a war against Venezuela, but suggested Nicolás Maduro's days as the country's president were numbered.

Mr. Trump spoke on the matter in CBS's 60 Minutes, where he was asked if the US was going to war against Venezuela.

"I doubt it. I don't think so, but they've been treating us very badly," said the US president, who was then asked whether Mr. Maduro's days as president were numbered. "I would say, yeah, I think so. Yeah," he declared.

However, Mr. Trump did not confirm whether there would be land strikes in Venezuela, telling the CBS reporter he "wouldn't be inclined to say" because "I don't talk to a reporter about whether or not I'm going to strike".

For two months, the US military has been building up a force of warships, fighter jets, bombers, Marines, drones, and spy planes in the Caribbean Sea.

It is the largest deployment there for decades.

The US continues to launch deadly strikes on alleged drug smuggling boats in the Caribbean with the latest on Saturday.

The Trump administration says the strikes are necessary to stem the flow of drugs into the US.
