Jamaica war rocked by two earthquakes on Sunday, the first one measuring magnitude 5.6 and the second 6.8.
The Earthquake Unit at the University of the West Indies, Mona, reported that the preliminary quake occurred lat 10:50 a.m., and was approximately 152 kilometres north of Ocho Rios, St Ann.
It had a focal depth of 14.6 kilometres and was reportedly felt across several parishes.
The second quake, felt approximately 11:51 a.m., was at a depth of 23.5 kilometres, according to Professor of Sedimentary Geology Simon Mitchell.
Professor Mitchell, speaking on Radio Jamaica's That's a Rap, said the island was spared major damage due to the location of the two earthquakes, located on the Oriente faultline, which "does not come through Jamaica."
"That faultline goes south of Cuba, and then it goes into northern Hispaniola, and then off to Puerto Rico," he explained.
