UK suspends refugee family reunion applications

UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has announced the government will temporarily suspend new refugee family reunion applications in an "overhaul" of the asylum system.

Shadow home secretary Chris Philp says the changes are not enough, and if someone enters the UK "illegally" they "should not be allowed" to bring family members.

It comes after Keir Starmer tells the BBC he wants to "bring forward" the government's plan to close all asylum hotels by 2029.

The PM also defends his No 10 shake-up after appointing Darren Jones to a newly created post as his chief secretary.
