Violence reduction remains a priority of gov't, says Holness

Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness

Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness has said violence reduction will continue to be a priority of his administration during the third term.

He said adding Peace to the portfolio of the Ministry of National Security is a reflection of the task ahead to build the conditions for lasting peace.

He believes social violence can become a thing of the past.

"Jamaica has had several successes in its development. One that I am particularly proud of is that we have managed to eliminate political violence from our society. It's a major achievement. And it was done in a cooperative way. I believe that this generation of leaders also has the capability to eliminate social violence from our society," he insisted.

Dr. Holness said while homicides have fallen significantly, the government must address the underlying conditions that promote violence, which will be the focus of the Ministry of National Security and Peace jointly with other ministries.
