Carlington 'Tommy' Godfrey, a man who had been listed as Westmoreland's most wanted, is dead.
The 29-year-old was killed on Friday morning in a reported confrontation with the police. A lawman was shot and wounded in the incident.
Acting Commanding Officer for Westmoreland, Deputy Superintendent ShaunJaye Mitchell, told Radio Jamaica News that Godfrey engaged the police during a targeted operation in Little London, and was shot.
DSP Mitchell said Godfrey had been the target of numerous operations in the parish, including joint cross-border operations.
"Now, this operation, we consider it a successful operation, as Godfrey has been wreaking havoc in the parish of Westmoreland, particularly the Frome and Grange Hill areas, where he has been featured in a number of violent incidents, including shooting at the police."
The success of the operation, DSP Mitchell insisted, "is a testament to the fact that criminals are not welcomed in Westmoreland or anywhere in Area One".
He urged citizens to support the police, and to provide information about suspected criminals operating within their communities.
On June 19, 2015, Godfrey escaped from the Savanna-la-Mar Police lock-up in Westmoreland.
He was wanted for murder, shooting with intent and illegal possession of firearm and ammunition.
Two years later the police recaptured him in Alexandria.
In 2020, Godfrey was among a group of men charged with being a member of the King's Valley Gang, but they were freed after the Crown failed to prove any of the counts in the indictment.
