Dramaine Jones, Regional Operations Manager for WPM Waste Management
WPM Waste Management Limited is urging residents to properly separate debris from regular household garbage to speed up clean-up efforts and reduce the risk of rat infestation.
Regional Operations Manager Dramaine Jones says garbage collection has not always been timely in recent years, but since the passage of Hurricane Melissa, crews have been working daily.
Mr. Jones said some communities are generating far more waste than usual - in some cases, increasing from one truckload to as many as eight.
"One of the things that we encourage persons to do is to ensure that you separate the storm waste. So it means the tree cuttings, the zinc, the board, the bulky waste, etc. separated from the residential waste because that makes it easier for compactors to come in. Rats typically, they'll hide under the zinc or they'll probably hide under the board, but they feed on what is produced in the household waste," he explained.
Mr. Jones appealed for residents to "continue to bag their waste until we get there; ensure that you separate from the bulky waste" so that the sanitation team does not have to spend additional time to separate the waste when they come to collect.
