Senior cop in Guyana facing hundreds of financial crimes charges

An Assistant Commissioner in the Guyana Police Force is facing more than 200 charges relating to financial crimes.

In October, the embattled top cop, his wife, a police sergeant, and a businessman appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates' Courts, accused of committing serious financial crimes and other offences.

The lawman, an attorney with 25 years of service in the Guyana Police Force, then faced 30 charges, including money laundering, obtaining money by false pretence, misconduct in public office, liability of officials, and larceny by a public official.

He was granted bail on the 30 indictable charges on his first court appearance, after which he was slapped with 201 more charges.

He is set to return to court on January 17, next year.
