Thirteen, including Bahamian police and defence officials, charged with cocaine trafficking in the US

United States law enforcement authorities say 13 persons, including high-ranking members of the Royal Bahamas Police Force and the Royal Bahamas Defence Force, face possible life imprisonment after they were charged with cocaine importation and related weapons offences.

The United States attorney for the Southern District of New York, Damian Williams, says that, as alleged for years, drug traffickers have smuggled tonnes of cocaine through The Bahamas with the support and protection of corrupt Bahamian government officials.

These individuals control airports throughout the country and provide sensitive information about US Coast Guard movements to drug traffickers.

The Bahamas Prime Minister Phillip Davis has pledged that the government will act decisively to ensure that those responsible for these breaches, regardless of rank or position, are held accountable.
