Kamla Persad-Bissessar, speaking on Monday night after her party's electoral victory
The opposition United National Congress in Trinidad & Tobago won Monday's parliamentary general election in that country, unseating the incumbent People's National Movement, which had been in office for two consecutive terms.
UNC leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar, a former Prime Minister herself from May 26, 2010 to September 9, 2015, will once again take the reins as head of government. She is the only woman to serve in this post in Trinidad and Tobago's electoral history.
The PNM's loss means outgoing Prime Minister Stuart Young managed to hold on to that title for a little more than a month, having succeeded his predecessor Dr Keith Rowley only on March 17 this year.
It was Dr Rowley, who had remained the political head of the party, who conceded defeat in the election on Monday night.
"We've done it before, conceding defeat on election night, but tomorrow is a new day," he said as he encouraged his party's supporters not to be disheartened.
