Education minister responds to Corey Bennett's accusations

Days after head coach of Hydel High Corey Bennett told the Gleaner newspaper that the school's participation at this year's ISSA GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Championships is in jeopardy due to financial constraints, education minister, Senator Dr Dana Morris-Dixon has chimed in on the matter.

In response to questions from Radio Jamaica Sports at Wednesday's post cabinet press briefing, the minister expressed alarm about accusations by Bennett, given her ministry's increased involvement in the school's progress.

In an interview with the Jamaica Gleaner last week, Bennett confessed that preparations have been significantly hampered by lack of funding, criticizing the Ministry of Education and the school's administration for limited support, with the $1-million in prize money from last year's triumph being turned over to the ministry.

Meanwhile, Dr Morris-Dixon insists her ministry is committed to sustaining the sporting reputation within high schools. Minister Morris-Dixon who says she intends to have another conversation with coach Bennett on the issue.

Meanwhile, when Radio Jamaica Sports contacted coach Bennett on Wednesday afternoon, he promised a response after the day's training session. The Issa Grace Kennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Championships are set for March 24-28 at the National Stadium.
