Forde fancies Windies T20 World Cup chances despite recent poor run

Voice of West Indies all-rounder Matthew Forde

West Indies all-rounder Matthew Forde is still confident the team can do well at the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup, despite their recent poor run of form.

The West Indies suffered a 23 run defeat to Afghanistan in their official T20 warm-up encounter in Bengaluru on Wednesday.

Batting first, Afghanistan who recently defeated the West Indies 2-1 in a 3-match series, continued their dominance of the Caribbean men by posting 182-6. Ibrahim Zadran top scored with 51 and shared in a 90 run opening stand with Rahmanullah Gurbaz who made 43.

Azmatullah Omarzai also chipped in with 35 from 15 balls before being the third batsman to retire out, meaning the Windies bowlers only took 3 wickets, one of which was a run-out.

Gudakesh Motie and Roston Chase took a wicket each.

Forde top scored with 52 in the Windies total of 159-7 chasing 183, while sharing an unbroken 77 run 8th wicket partnership with Jason Holder who made 25.

They took the team from a perilous position of 82-7. Rovman Powell with 32 from 27 balls, was the only other batsman to reach double figures.

The Caribbean team will head into the World Cup in Sri Lanka and India with just two wins from their last 10 completed T20 matches.

The right-handed Forde has also benefited from coach Darren Sammy's experiments which has seen him being used at different phases in the innings.

The Windies will open their World Cup campaign on Saturday against Scotland who are a late replacement for Bangladesh.
