JAAA looking at two options for men's 400m at National Trials

Radio Jamaica Sports understands that two options are being considered for a revised schedule for the men's 400 metres at the National Senior Championships starting next Thursday at the National Stadium.

The first option is to have preliminaries at 6:50 pm on Thursday's first day of the championships for athletes ranked outside the top 16 seeded performances.

The top 8 would then advance by time to the semi-finals to join the top 16 ranked athletes.

Three semi-finals would then be contested at 8:50 pm on Friday, June 28 with the top two in each semi and next two best by times advancing to the final on Saturday's third day at 7:45 pm.

The second option being considered is to use a matrix to decide on the 24 contestants for three semi-finals on day 1 of the championships with the final on Friday's second day at 8:50 pm.

It's understood that the majority of coaches and other stakeholders are in favour of this option as they believe it would be important for the athletes to have a day's rest before the specially-arranged mile relay on Sunday, June 30.

There are 45 athletes declared for the men's 400 metres. The top 16 athletes are expected to be available for the mile relay to be staged on the final day as a last ditch effort by the JAAA for Jamaica to gain qualification for the Paris Olympics.

The JAAA technical committee will meet on Saturday with a final decision and announcement regarding the men's 400 metres expected by Sunday.
