Jockey Samantha Fletcher wins court case against JRC

Report by RJRGLEANER Communications Group Sports Reporter Spencer Darlington

Jockey Samantha Fletcher has won her year and half long court battle against the Jamaica Racing Commission (JRC).

Fletcher and her legal team had taken the JRC to court in an effort to overturn a 20 race day ban she was handed in March 2023.

Following Friday's ruling on the fixed date claim form in the Supreme Court before the Honourable Justice Anne-Marie Nembhard, it was adjudged that an order of certiorari has been granted to quash the decisions of the JRC made on March 7, 2023 and March 21, 2023.

In the meantime, Fletcher's attorney Douglas Thompson is to prepare, file and serve these orders.

Fletcher was punished for not taking all reasonable and permissable measures throughout the 7th event on February 4, 2023, astride Gone A Negril to ensure the horse was given its best possible placing.

However, her legal team took the matter to the Supreme Court and sought several declarations, including that the decision of enquiry made on March 7, 2023 when Fletcher was initially handed the 25 race day ban and the decision of the JRC made on March 21, 2023, were  illegal, void and of no effect.
