Sunshine Girls edge past England in opening test

Netball coach Oberon Pitterson targets improvements in centre court as Jamaica, who won Tuesday night's opening netball test against England, look to cement the series on Thursday.

Jamaica prevailed 57-56, led by Jahnielle Fowler's 48 goals.

However Anna-Kay Griffiths scored the game winner.

Griffiths ended with nine goals.

The lead changed at each interval, and the Sunshine Girls entered the final quarter trailing 46-43.

Despite overcoming this for the win, Pitterson says there are areas to improve.

“Our drive not there at times, we will work on it, but there are times when we needed to drive from east to west and not north to south and there were times when the English defenders really had us on the outskirts and we really need to look to drive to the centre of the court,” Pitterson said.

Pamela Cookey scored 29 goals for England and Joe Harten supported the team with 27.

Coach Sue Hawkins says they will need to handle the pressure in order to level the series.

“We need to now build on what we generated now to build but they are very disappointed that they let that slip away and we’ll come back fighting the next day. Under pressure at different times we let ourselves down and I think that’s what we have to address,” Hawkins said.

Game two will be played on Thursday at 7:30 pm.
