Head coach Rick Turner has hailed the accomplishment of the Jamaican men's basketball team after they defeated their Puerto Rican counterparts 97-92 in their return leg match in Group B of the FIBA Americas 2027 World Cup qualifier in San Juan on Monday night.
Kofi Cockburn once again led the Jamaicans with a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds along with 5 assists and 1 steal.
Chase Audige also scored a team-high 20 points, while Romaine Thomas contributed 18 and Tyran de Lattibeaudiere 15 points.
In what is considered a huge upset, the world number 96 ranked Jamaicans swept both matches against the world number 16 ranked Puerto Ricans having also won the first leg match 92-90 last Friday also in San Juan.
Jamaica will next face the Bahamas in February before taking on Canada in their other Group B qualifiers. With their two wins, Jamaica are now joint leaders of Group B along with Canada on 4 points each.
The team also became the first country in the history of these qualifiers to score 90 or more points in its first two games. Two teams from the group will qualify for the 2027 FIBA World Cup.
