Business community concerned about crime surge

The Chief Executive Officer of  Seprod Group, Richard Pandohie, says the business community is extremely worried about the upsurge in crime in Jamaica, with the murder of close to 100 people  since January 1.

In an interview with Radio Jamaica News, Mr Pandohie warned that the crime wave could cripple Jamaica's economic prospects this year.

”When you consider the crime alone is counting for more than that  - so I think that apart from the economic figures, we’re looking at the quality of life - people are scared . Everyone wants to say that its random - but it’s the women, the children, there is no respect for people. I’m at a loss for words - we look at how we fight the pandemic, our crime is epidemic - it is affecting our quality of life,” he said.

Pandohie also said that  members of  the private sector are spending millions of  dollars to protect their businesses and workers from violence.
