Prime Minister Andrew Holness
Prime Minister Andrew Holness has said the introduction of the 19 new straddle carriers at Kingston Freeport Terminal has created a number of employment opportunities.
Speaking at the ribbon cutting ceremony at the Terminal on Thursday morning, Mr. Holness said 200 new employees have been added to operations at the facility.
The Prime Minister said the investment will contribute to the development of Jamaica's economy, and to improving the domestic and transshipment operations on the island.
He added that the government, through the Port Authority of Jamaica, is looking for other lands in the area for possible expansion of the port and logistics operations.
Some US$20 million was invested in the fleet of 19 new straddle carriers, as part of plans to expand and upgrade services at the terminal.
Straddle carriers, used to move and stack containers, play a major role in ensuring the efficient flow of domestic and transshipment operations.
Prime Minister Holness said the acquisition of the straddle carriers will result in even greater efficiency at the port by facilitating faster loading and unloading of containers.
