More airlines looking at opportunities to connect Caribbean region

Delano Seiveright, Senior Strategist in the Tourism Ministry

The Ministry of Tourism says while there has been an improvement in airlift connecting Jamaica to the rest of the region last year, there are still major gaps.

For years, movement around the region has been constrained due either to the cost of travel or the lack of available service.

Delano Seiveright, Senior Strategist in the Tourism Ministry, said more airlines are, however, seeing opportunities to connect countries in the region.

"The Caribbean is just too expensive to move around. It's just the truth. It's cheaper to go to Europe if you travel from the United States, in some respects, to some parts of the Caribbean," he noted, adding that more competition should improve connectivity within the Caribbean.

Mr. Seiveright praised Caribbean Airlines, who he said has been "very proactive in wanting to better troubleshoot the arrangements as it relates to moving around the Caribbean".

"We're also happy about Arajet which is an interesting option. They use Santo Domingo as their hub in the Dominican Republic, and of course, InterCaribbean [Airways] has really been doing a good job. The mere fact that they are doing the non-stops between Kingston and Barbados, to us, is a very positive development," he said.

Connectivity in the Caribbean has been a major sore point, made worse by the scaling down of the regional airline, LIAT.

The government of Antigua and Barbuda has announced that plans are advanced to have a newly organised LIAT begin operations this year.
