Timeshare legislation a big boost for Jamaica - McNeil

The Jamaican House of  Representatives has passed legislation for the introduction of  timeshare vacation schemes in Jamaica.

The Timeshare Vacation Bill was approved during Tuesday's sitting of  the House.

A timeshare is a property in which multiple parties hold rights and each is allotted a period of  time to use it.

Timeshare properties are typically resort condominiums. Owners become repeat visitors and use local services more directly than hotel guests, which has positive implications for the economy.

Tourism Minister Dr. Wykeham McNeil told RJR News he expects the legislation will provide a major boost to the industry, with the American Resort Development Association confirming at a recent meeting that "one of the areas of demand in the world for timeshare is the Caribbean."

Against that background, he said that with Jamaica having "an upsurge in investment," it was important to put in place appropriate legislation to encourage the development of timeshare properties.
